Known mainly for his productions as Photek (although he also had a number of other aliases), he is widely regarded as the single most talented producer in the history of Jungle and Drum & Bass. The sheer stylistic breadth of his output is staggering, not to mention the way in which he developed his unique style of breakbeat engineering to levels that, even now some 25 years later, leave many producers in bewildered awe!
Rupert was also an integral part of the Odysee story. He gave generously of his time to help the development of the early Source Direct sound, and this Phase 1 release that he gave to Tilla for Odysee played a very important role in raising the profile of the label.

The original Phase 1 cut featured on ODY02 back in 1995, and is an amazing example of mid-90’s pre-Modus Operandi Photek wizardry. Remastered from the original DAT tape for 2022, the warmth of the pads, the crisp curling intricacy of the Plastic Jam break are quite simply stunning, a timeless and classic sound that is as relevant today as it was 27 years ago.

On remix duties we are very proud to welcome Gabrial Au and Jessie Heifetz a.k.a. Gremlinz & Jesta to the Odysee family! With a string of releases on the biggest labels in the scene including Metalheadz, 31, Droogs and Samurai, they bring an undeniably imposing and heavyweight presence to this remix. There are so many clever corners in their rendering; added references to the source material, and clever integration of many trademark Photek sounds that heads will recognise immediately. But make no mistake, this is modern Jungle with serious intention; deep, dark and delicious from start to finish!

Finally Label co-owner Andy Odysee steps up to deliver a punchy and pacey D&B remix. For those familiar with Andy’s existing remixes of the classic Odysee tracks, this will strike an instant chord. There is that unmistakable strident drum framework that holds all the breakbeat curls in check, the falling synth bass work that is almost Dubstep-esque in its use of polyrhythmic LFO, and that same attention to detail when it comes to referencing all the original elements. As such, notwithstanding all the modern twists, there is still that respectful deference to the feel and emotion of the original track.
